Gaudí's city by the sea, with beaches, tapas bars and the Gothic Quarter on your doorstep.
Barcelona mixes a working Mediterranean port with the buildings of Antoni Gaudí. His Sagrada Família, still being built more than 140 years after work began in 1882, is a short metro ride from the medieval lanes of the Gothic Quarter.
You can spend the morning at Park Güell or Casa Batlló and the afternoon on the sand at Barceloneta. Food is a big part of any visit: graze the stalls of La Boqueria market, then share tapas late into the evening, as locals do.
The city is compact and the metro is easy to use, which makes it a good choice for a long weekend or a family break.
Entry rules depend on your passport and the purpose of your trip, and they can change, so check the official sources below before you book. Spain uses the EU's Entry/Exit System for short stay visitors who are not EU nationals. The EU's official Travel to Europe site explains it, along with the ETIAS travel authorisation.
Read TravelHealthPro's Spain page and book a travel health appointment well before your trip if you have any health questions. Summers are hot and sunny, so drink plenty of water and use sun protection, especially on the beach. Travel insurance that covers medical care is sensible.
The currency is the euro (EUR). Carry some cash for small purchases and markets, tell your bank before you travel, and check what your card charges for payments abroad.

Catalan and Spanish are both official languages in Barcelona. A greeting or a thank you in either is a friendly touch.
Use the Metro, buses and trams, which share one fare system with some commuter trains, set by the metropolitan transport authority. Two operators run the Metro lines between them.
Metro line 9 links both terminals of Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) with the city, and a commuter train runs from Terminal 2. Buses also run into the centre, about 15 km northeast of the airport.
