Delhi is where most journeys through northern India begin. It is the start of the Golden Triangle, the classic touring route on to Agra and Jaipur, and flights to Udaipur change here too, so it is the natural place to begin a journey through the north.

Old and New Delhi

The city has been a capital for centuries. Humayun's Tomb, the Red Fort and the Qutb Minar are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Jama Masjid is another highlight, and Old Delhi's Chandni Chowk is still one of the busiest markets in India. New Delhi, laid out in the 1920s and 1930s, brings broad avenues, India Gate and leafy residential areas.

Before you go

Entry and visas

Entry rules for India depend on your passport and the purpose of your trip, and they can change. Check the official sources below before you book and again shortly before you travel. If you need a visa, apply only through India's official visa portal, run by its Bureau of Immigration, and be wary of other sites that ask for extra payment.

Health

See TravelHealthPro's India page and book a travel health appointment several weeks before you go. Protect yourself from mosquito bites, take care with food and water hygiene, and use sun protection, as average highs are near 40°C in May and June. Delhi's air quality is often poor from November to February, so check local air quality reports during your stay.

Money

India's currency is the Indian rupee (INR). Carry some cash for markets, street food stalls and auto rickshaws, tell your bank before you travel, and check what your card charges for payments and withdrawals abroad.

General information only, not legal or medical advice. Rules change, so check the official source before you travel.
