Budapest became one city in 1873, when Buda on its hills joined Pest on the flat bank opposite. The Danube runs between them, and most of the great landmarks face each other across the water.
On the Pest side stands the Hungarian Parliament Building, one of the largest in Europe. Facing it are Buda Castle and the Fisherman's Bastion. A cruise on the Danube shows you both banks in a single trip.
The city sits on more than a hundred thermal springs. The Széchenyi baths, with their yellow pavilions and outdoor pools, open all year. For food, the Great Market Hall sells paprika, salami and lángos, and in the old Jewish quarter ruin bars fill abandoned buildings.
