Luxor, ancient Thebes, is so full of monuments that a little planning goes a long way. Knowing which bank to visit on which day, and at what hour, makes the heat much easier to manage.
On the east bank, the vast temple of Karnak and Luxor Temple are linked by an avenue of sphinxes, and Luxor Temple is worth seeing again by night. On the west bank lie the Valley of the Kings, the temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon.
Many visitors rise early for a hot air balloon flight over the west bank at sunrise, then cross the river by felucca in the afternoon. The winter months, October to April, are best; summer days are very hot.
