Nyhavn's painted houses, Tivoli Gardens and royal palaces in a compact city made for cycling. Three days here go a long way.
Copenhagen is small, calm and easy to find your way around, which makes it a good first city in Scandinavia. Locals cycle everywhere, and most of the sights sit close together.
Nyhavn, the old harbour with its brightly painted townhouses, is where the canal tours set off. Tivoli Gardens has entertained visitors since 1843 and remains one of the world's oldest amusement parks, with concerts and gardens as well as rides. The royal palaces of Amalienborg and Rosenborg are nearby, and the Little Mermaid sits on the waterfront.
The city is known for its food and Danish design, and Kronborg Castle at Helsingør, the setting of Hamlet, makes a good day out.
