A walled city on the Adriatic with islands just offshore. Come in June or September and give yourself a week to enjoy both.
Dubrovnik is a city of stone walls and clear water. The old town is small, so we usually suggest a week: a few days inside the walls and a few out on the islands.
The walls run for almost two kilometres around the old town. Walking the whole circuit, ideally early in the day, gives you the rooftops on one side and the sea on the other. Inside, the Stradun, the marble main street, leads past churches and palaces to the Rector's Palace. Game of Thrones fans will recognise many corners.
Ride the cable car up Mount Srđ for the views at sunset, or take the short ferry to Lokrum, a nature reserve with peacocks and places to swim. The Elaphiti islands and Cavtat are easy day trips.
High summer is the busiest time, so June and September are good choices. Our week at Hotel Excelsior is by the sea and a short walk from the walls. British Airways and easyJet fly direct from Gatwick in the summer season.
