Porto climbs in steep layers above the Douro river. It is a city for slow walks, river views and long lunches, and four days here feel unhurried.
The historic centre, including the Ribeira district by the water, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The double deck Dom Luís I Bridge crosses to Vila Nova de Gaia, where the port wine lodges run tours and tastings. In São Bento railway station, around 20,000 blue and white tiles tell the story of Portugal, and many churches have tiled fronts too.
River cruises pass under the city's six bridges. Longer trips go up the Douro Valley, whose terraced vineyards, where the grapes for port are grown, are also a World Heritage Site.
