Venice works best when you stay the night. Once the day visitors have gone, the canals are quiet in the early morning and the evening, and you see the city as the people who live there do.
There are no cars in the historic centre. The city stands on more than a hundred small islands joined by around 400 bridges, so you walk or take the vaporetto, the water bus that runs along the Grand Canal.
St Mark's Square is the centre of the city, with the gold mosaics of St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace beside it. From the Rialto Bridge you can watch the boats and visit the food market. Across the lagoon, Murano is known for glass and Burano for its brightly painted houses.
